Entomology Studies (2020-2023)

These drawings are a collection of studies I created at various times, inspired by the fascinating insects I encountered in Australia.

Among them are the captivating Fiddler Beetle, the melodic Golden Drummer Cicada, and the striking Australian Striped Moth.

Each of these creatures captured my imagination and became subjects for my artwork.

Once the initial drawings were complete, I delved into the realm of creativity, exploring various styles to bring these illustrations to life.

Species represented:

Australian Striped Hawk Moth (Hyles livornicoides) which is native to central Australia.
The caterpillars were a unique food source in the middle of the desert. Through the thousands of years of Aboriginal culture, the caterpillars came to be regarded as sacred totems of the local Arrernte people.

Golden Drummer Cicada, (Tropha saccata)

I found a specimen on the floor in Alice Springs and drew it using pencils. It’s a native from Australia and reputedly the loudest insect in the world. This bug is out between November and February, peaking in December.

Fiddler Beetle, Eupoecila australasiae

These are common in heath and woodlands in south-eastern Australia. and are named for the fiddle (violin) shaped patterns on their backs.

You can purchase postcards and A3 or A4 prints for those illustrations, directly on my shop!
